Top 10
Mark 14:62
Jesus makes three deity claims in this verse in response to the question from caiaphas. Caiaphas asked "Are you the Christ, the son of the blessed one?" Jesus' 3 responses are all separate deity claims:
I am - Reference to Exodus 3:14 where God first gives his name Ehya ashr ehya. Jesus is claiming to simply exist which is a claim of eternity. To say ehya would be a very unnatural way to answer that question which is why we know this is in reference to God's name.
The son of Man sitting at the right hand of power - reference to psalm 110 but also an authority claim over the temple and priesthood. Psalm 110 gives us the picture of what Jesus means sitting at the right hand of power. This is a deity claim as God is telling him that he will sit next to him and will give all kingdoms over to him for his rule. Only God is shown as sitting in heaven. To sit in the presence of a king means you are on par with the king. You have the king's authority. So God saying to Jesus that he will sit in his throne room is the same as giving him the throne of heaven. Not only that, when Jesus says at the right hand of power, this is referring to the mercy seat. Where God dwells within the Earth. This location is between the cherubim on the ark of the covenant. If anyone were to touch the ark they would die instantly. The high priest would even go into the holy of holies near the ark with a rope tied around them just in case they messed up and touched the ark and died. The other priests could drag their bodies out. The high priest could only enter this place once a year and only after cleansing themselves. Yet Jesus is saying that he could walk in there right now and sit on the ark. This is such a powerful claim it's shocking.
Coming with the clouds of heaven - reference to Daniel 7:13 where Daniel sees someone who looks human who comes in the clouds of heaven with the ancient of days. He was given authority, glory, and sovereign power over all nations and peoples.
So Jesus is claiming to be the messiah, Yahweh, the right hand of the father, and will have all nations bow down and worship him (worship is only given to God in the bible).
This is also why after hearing this Caiaphas tore his clothing and stated that they no longer needed witnesses since he had blasphemed. This shows that he acknowledged that Jesus claimed to be God in no uncertain terms
I AM statements of John
I AM (Yahweh)
John 6:20
John 8:24
John 8:28
John 8:58
Similar to the last claim. Jesus is referring to exodus 3:14 where God declares his name. Interestingly, this also includes Moses being compared which makes the deity claim of him using "I exist" (the name of God) much more concrete as his own Godhood.
And again you can see that the Jews wanted to kill him for claiming to be God.
John 18:5
I am (the)
I am the good shepherd (John 10:11, 14)
I am the way, the truth, and the life 14:6
I am the resurrection and the life 11:25
I am the bread of life (6:35, 48, 51)
Jesus claims here that his origin is heaven and not earth. The jews grumble about this since they knew his family and knew he was born on earth. Then Jesus makes the statement more directly. He is the fulfillment of the manna of God. He is the bread of life which will bring salvation to all. This makes his origin of heaven and says that he will be the one to resurrect the faithful on the last day. Making him God.
I am the light of the world (8:12, 9:5)
I am the narrow door (10:7, 9)
I am the true vine 15:1
Jesus is Lord of the sabbath
Jesus calmed the storm, walking on water, and accepted worship (psalm 107)
John 10:30
Jesus in this passage claims that he and the father are one. This indicates that he has a divine essence to him which the Jews pick up on. They pick up stones to kill him and Jesus asks why and they respond that he, a man, makes himself out to be God.
John 14:6-13
Here Philip (one of the 12) asks Jesus to show him God the father. Jesus's response is "God has been in front of you for years now. How can you ask for me to show you God when I, who am God, is right before you" (paraphrasing).
Matthew 11:27
Jesus is saying here that all authority over heaven and earth have been placed into his hands by the Father. Also that only he knows and has seen the Father and no one knows the true Son except the Father. And that we can't know the Father unless Jesus allows us to.
All of which would equate him to the Father as God.
Matthew 28:18
All authority has been given to Jesus (only God could assume such a role) and Jesus lists himself as one of the Godheads along with the Father and the Holy Spirit. This is not only a deity claim but also a trinity claim (which is doubly useful to remember).
Luke 5:20-24
Here Jesus forgives sins. The Jewish leaders ask "who can forgive sins but God alone?". This is based on the fact that the only way sins could be forgiven was through animal sacrifice. Where the animals died the death that we deserved. But this didn't apply for all sins. Just unintentional sins. Intentional sins were beyond the ability of the animal sacrifice to achieve. Which is why when Jesus made the blanket statement here that all his sins were forgiven, he was making himself greater than that of any priest and of the sacrifices and torah. A massive claim.
Matthew 14. Side note, Jesus walking on water was also a deity claim although an indirect one. Only God is seen as walking on water in the bible in Job 9. Thus making Jesus be able to do what God alone has been shown to do. They also worshiped him afterward.
John 20:28
Not a direct statement by Jesus but Thomas at seeing the resurrected Jesus declares that he is God and Jesus doesn't rebuke him but accepts his statement. Showing that Jesus thought he was God and so did the 12.
