Muhammad married Aisha when she was just a young child.
Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 62, Hadith 64: Narrated Aisha: "The Prophet married me when I was six years old, and he consummated his marriage when I was nine years old."
Sahih al-Bukhari 6130 explicitly calls her a little girl playing with dolls long after the marriage began.
Muslims may be shocked to find this out. They may counter to say that according to contemporary Western legal standards for age of consent, this is labeled as pedophilia but not at the time of Muhammad in Arabia.
The Qur'an says that "Muhammad's character is the highest for all humanity, for all periods." (Surah 33:21). There is no example of a prophet marrying a prepubescent child or consummating marriage with a minor in the previous scriptures. Muhammad's marriage to Aisha exceptional rather than typical, and not something that can be defended by appealing to universal ancient practices. It was possible for a child to be "betrothed" but this was a contract and NOT a marriage. There was no ancient civilisation that would have allowed marriage to a 6 year old and certainly not consumated at 9 years old.
