This verse marks the definitive pivot of Islam away from Jerusalem and toward Mecca. This verse is less about WHERE people pray and more about the epistemological claim the Quran makes regarding what Jews and Christians "know" from their own books.
Surah 2:144:
"We have seen the turning of thy face to heaven . And now We shall make thee turn toward a qibla which is dear to thee. So turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship, and ye , wheresoever ye may be, turn your faces toward it. And lo! those who have been given the Scripture know that it is the truth from their Lord. Allah is not uninformed of what they do."
The verse explicitly states that Jews and Christians "know well" that the change of Qibla (direction) to Mecca is "the truth from their Lord."
For them to "know" this, the information must be present in the Torah or the Gospel.
There is absolutely NO mention of a future prophet changing the direction of prayer to a shrine in Mecca in the entire Biblical canon. In fact, the Bible consistently identifies Jerusalem (Zion) as the place where God’s name dwells forever (2 Chronicles 7:16).
If a Muslim apologist responds by saying, "The prophecy was in the Bible but was removed/corrupted," Surah 2:144 effectively blocks them.
The verse says the People of the Book "know well" it is the truth. You cannot "know" something is true based on a book that has had that specific truth deleted.
If the prophecy was gone, they couldn't know it. If they know it, the book must have been uncorrupted in the 7th century.
If it was uncorrupted and we have those same manuscripts today, we can see the prophecy isn't there—proving the Quran's claim was incorrect.
The Quran says the Qibla (direction) was changed to one that is "dear to thee" (Muhammad).
The change appears to be a concession to Muhammad's personal desire. To justify this to the People of the Book, the Quran claims their own scriptures validate it.
Surah 2:144 claims that Jews and Christians 'know well' from their own scriptures that the change of Qibla to Mecca is the 'truth from their Lord.'
Where in the Torah or Gospel is it prophesied that the Qibla would move from Jerusalem to Mecca?
If it's not there, then the Quran is making a false statement about the Bible.
If you say it was corrupted and removed, then how could the Jews and Christians in the 7th century 'know well' it was the truth?
Muslims apologists are trapped:
In both cases, the Quran fails its own test of confirmation. In the following verse Surah 2:145 the Jews and Christians rejected Muhammad when they point out there is NO biblical evidence for this Islamic shift to Mecca.
This also verse moves the debate away from "general" corruption and focuses on a specific, identifiable claim that can be easily debunked by looking at the biblical text.
