There is a notable shift in the Quran’s stance toward Christians and Jews, moving from inclusive recognition to exclusive condemnation.
Muhammad was currently seeking alliances with the Jewish tribes of Medina. The "revelation" reflects a strategic need for coalition-building.
Surah 2:62:
Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans... will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
God guarantees the reward of Christians and Jews.
Recognition of the Book, but a demand for submission to the new legal framework. The message becomes: "We gave you a law, but now follow this one." The "Peoples of the Book" are seen as valid but superseded.
Surah 5:48:
We sent to you the Scripture with the truth, confirming the Scriptures that came before it, and with final authority over them: so judge between them according to what God has sent down. Do not follow their whims, which deviate from the truth that has come to you. We have assigned a law and a path to each of you. If God had so willed, He would have made you one community, but He wanted to test you through that which He has given you, so race to do good: you will all return to God and He will make clear to you the matters you differed about.
Hardline Exclusivism: Total rejection of all faiths except Islam; condemnation of previous scriptures as "corrupted." With military dominance established, the "pluralistic" verses are effectively nullified. Non-Muslims are now categorized as "losers" in the hereafter. God guarantees their failure/loss!
Surah 3:85:
And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him...
This verse is historically cited to cancel (naskh) the promises made in 2:62. It marks the moment "Islam" becomes a distinct, exclusive brand rather than a general term for submission.
These verse effectively serves as the practical application of Surah 3:85. It moves the condemnation from the "hereafter" into the "here and now," justifying military subjugation of the very people who were supposedly "safe" according to Surah 2:62.
Surah 9:29:
Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day... from among those who were given the Scripture until they pay the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.Surah 9:5:
When the forbidden months are over, wherever you encounter the idolaters, kill them, seize them, besiege them, wait for them at every lookout post; but if they turn, maintain the prayer, and pay the prescribed alms, let them go on their way, for God is most forgiving and merciful.
