The Quran Verse
Surah 32:7–9:
...He began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his posterity from an extract of a liquid disdained. Then He fashioned him and breathed into him of His Spirit...
The Polemical Point: The Galenic Template
This sequence (Liquid -> Fashioning -> Spirit/Senses) reflects the Hellenistic medical theories of Galen (2nd century AD) which were the "gold standard" of science in the 7th-century Near East.
The Quran describes a sequential "fashioning" where the physical form is completed before the soul/senses are added. Modern biology shows that "ears, eyes, and hearts" (v. 9) develop concurrently with the body's fashioning at a cellular level, not as a final step after the body is "molded." By using the term "extract" (sulalah), the text mimics the Aristotelian idea that only a specific part of the semen contributes to life—a theory now known to be an incomplete understanding of genetics.
