The Quran Verse
Surah 34:15-17
"There was for Saba' in their dwelling place a sign: two gardens on the right and on the left... But they turned away, so We sent upon them the flood of the dam [Arim]..."
The Historical/Archaeological Reality
The Ma'rib Dam in modern-day Yemen was a marvel of ancient engineering, built by the Sabaeans around the 8th century BC to irrigate the desert.
The Event:
Archaeological evidence and historical records (like the Monumentum Adulitanum) show the dam suffered several breaches. The final, catastrophic collapse occurred around 542–570 AD—only a few decades before Muhammad’s birth.
To the historian, this is not a "lost ancient mystery" revealed by God, but a recent national tragedy that was still fresh in the oral history of the Arabian Peninsula. The Quran takes a known engineering failure caused by long-term neglect and political instability and reinterprets it as a sudden "Divine Punishment" for theological "ingratitude."
