Introduction to the Verse:
The Quran frequently appeals to the precise movements of the sun and moon as absolute proof of divine order, framing it within the natural observations of its target audience.
The Quran Verse
Surah 35:13:
...He merges the night into the day and merges the day into the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term...
The text employs active verbs of motion (yajrī) exclusively for the celestial bodies while describing their interaction with the day and night.
This description aligns seamlessly with a geocentric cosmology, where the sun and moon physically travel over a fixed, stationary earth to create the day/night cycle. Modern science demonstrates that day and night are caused by the rotation of the Earth, not the sun "running" its course to merge into the night. By omitting the Earth's movement, the text mirrors the observational limitations of a 7th-century human author.
