The Quran Verse
Surah 42:5:
The heavens almost break from above them (yatafaṭṭarna min fawqihinna), and the angels exalt with praise of their Lord and ask forgiveness for those on earth...
The text describes the "heavens" as being under such immense spiritual pressure or physical weight from the divine presence above that they are on the verge of cracking or tearing apart.
The Cosmic Framework:
The Arabic verb yatafaṭṭarna explicitly denotes a physical splitting, ripping, or fracturing of a solid object (the same root is used in Surah 82:1 to describe the sky splitting apart at the end of the world).
This description perfectly mirrors the Ancient Near Eastern firmament model. It treats the upper atmosphere and outer space not as a boundless, near-vacuum spatial continuum, but as a solid, dome-like ceiling canopy hovering over a flat earth. A spatial vacuum cannot "crack from above" under physical weight, proving the verse relies on ancient visual perceptions of a structural sky.
