Home > Surah 43 - The Ornaments of Gold
This section directly addresses Christian beliefs about Christ. Verse 59 states:
Surah 43:59:
Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
However, verse 61 contains a phrase that has caused massive debate:
Surah 43:61:
"And indeed, Jesus will be a sign for the Hour, so have no doubt about it, and follow Me." (Alternatively translated as: "And indeed, he [Jesus] is a knowledge of the Hour...")
Why is Jesus, uniquely among all prophets in the Quran, designated as the sign or knowledge of the Final Hour?
Even within the Quranic text, Jesus is elevated to an eschatological status that dwarfs Muhammad. He is the one who returns, judges, and signals the end of time.
This shows that the Quran cannot completely strip Jesus of His unique, cosmic authority found in the New Testament, creating a tension with the claim that he was "not but a servant."
