This verse presents a bold claim regarding the Quran’s clarity and its external verification.
It makes the People of the Book the ultimate witnesses to the Quran’s truth, thereby anchoring the Quran’s validity to the very people (and Scriptures) it often challenges.
Surah 6:114:
Then is it other than Allah I should seek as judge while it is He who has sent down to you the Book explained in detail?' And those to whom We gave the Scripture know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth, so do not be among the doubters.
How can the People of the Book 'know' the Quran is from God unless they are comparing it to a reliable, uncorrupted standard they already possess?"
Knowledge requires a benchmark. If the Bible was corrupted, the People of the Book would have no "knowledge" to offer—only "corrupted opinions."
Since the verse claims they know it is truth, it validates the Bible they were using in the 7th century as a functional and true benchmark.
The verse calls the Quran a "Book explained in detail. A detailed explanation of a subject (like the history of the Prophets) must align with the primary sources.
If the "detailed explanation" (the Quran) says Jesus was never crucified, but the "Scripture given previously" (which the People of the Book "know") says He was, then the People of the Book would know the Quran is not from the Lord. The verse's claim only works if the two books are in perfect harmony.
The command "do not be among the doubters" follows the mention of those who have the Scripture.
This is the "Verification Loop" found in Surah 10:94. If you are in doubt, ask those who read the Book before you.
This places the Bible in the position of the "Senior Document." The Quran is the "Junior Document" seeking verification.
If the Senior Document (the Bible) contradicts the Junior (the Quran), the "knowledge" mentioned in 6:114 becomes the very thing that invalidates the Quranic claim.
Surah 6:114 is an appeal to the authority of the People of the Book. It assumes a level of scriptural continuity that allows a 7th-century Christian or Jew to recognize the Quran as "Truth" based on their existing Bible.
The Quran invites a double-check. When we perform that comparison today using the same manuscripts available then, we find a Bible that refutes the Quran. Therefore, the "knowledge" of the People of the Book becomes the primary evidence against the Quran's divine origin.
Since this verse claims the Quran is "sent down in truth," how does the very next verse (Surah 6:115) safeguard the idea that God's words (including those given to the People of the Book) can NEVER be changed?
