The surah opens with an oath that embeds a flawed geocentric understanding of the starry night sky.
Surah 85:1:
By the sky containing great stars..." (In Arabic: Dhat al-buruj)
The Scientific Error: The word "Buruj" translates literally to fortifications, towers, or castles. In ancient Arab cosmology (and confirmed by parallel verses like Surah 15:16 and 25:61), these constellations were viewed as physical military watchtowers built into the solid ceiling of the sky to house the angelic guards who hurl meteors at devils.
Modern astronomy has proven that stars and galaxies are located at vastly different depths across three-dimensional deep space; they are not clustered onto a single, solid architectural wall to form defensive fortifications.
