Home > Jesus is God in Mark's Gospel
While Matthew and Luke provide more narrative detail, Mark’s "short and punchy" account focuses on the sudden, violent breakthrough of the divine into the human realm.
Mark 1:9–11 - "Now it happened that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
And immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;
and a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
“Torn open” - Mark uses a specific, violent Greek word for the opening of the heavens: schizomenous (from schizo), meaning "ripped" or "torn apart." It is a echoes Isaih below:-
Isaiah 64:1 - Oh, that You would rend the heavens and come down,
That the mountains might quake at Your presence—
“Spirit descending” - The Baptism of Jesus signifies that the barrier between the Holy God and sinful humanity has been permanently shattered. This links to Genesis. where the Spirit of God "hovered" over the waters of the deep. The Spirit that was present at the first creation, is the same the Spirit that descends upon Jesus to signify that through Him, God is beginning another New Creation.
Genesis 1:2 - And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
“Like a dove” - This baptism also links to the dove at the time of Noah’s Flood. The dove signalled the end of judgment and the beginning of a new world for Noah,. Here the Spirit identifies Jesus as the "New Noah" who will carry humanity through the waters of judgment into a new covenant.
“A voice from heaven” - The Father’s Voice and words said are ““You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Psalm 2:7- “I will surely tell of the decree of Yahweh:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.Isaiah 42:1 - “Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold;
My chosen one in whom My soul is well-pleased.
I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the nations.Genesis 22:2 - Then He said, “Take now your son, your only one, whom you love, Isaac, and go forth to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”
“You are” - Some early heresies (like Adoptionism) suggested Jesus became the Son of God at this moment. However, modern scholarship emphasizes the present tense "You are," indicating that the Father is identifying what has always been true, rather than conferring a new status.
"My beloved Son" - N.T. Wright argues that where Israel (the "son" of God in the OT) failed in the wilderness, Jesus—the true, divine Son—succeeds.
The Mystery of the Trinity - The baptism is one of the clearest "Trinitarian moments" in the New Testament. The simultaneous presence of the three Persons proves their distinctness while affirming their unified mission:
This "Triadic" structure is used by patristic commentators to argue that the very nature of God is revealed at the Jordan; as the ancient saying goes: "Go to the Jordan and you will see the Trinity."
The dimension of Heaven (opened heavens) signify that the dimension of God (Heaven) and the dimension of Earth are meeting in the person of Jesus. He is the bridge where God's world and our world become one. The presence of the Dove (Spirit) and the Voice (Father) serves as a public "signature" of the Trinity on the person of Jesus, proving he is the "Equal Son" joined to the Father.
