Home > Jesus is God in Mark's Gospel
Jesus prays in the garden:
Mark 14:36:
"Abba, Father... not what I will, but what you will."
Jesus uses the unique, filial address to God that indicates an ontological relationship (The Son) rather than just a servant-master relationship.
Jesus uses the Aramaic "Abba," a term of extreme intimacy. While some modern scholars oversimplify this as "Daddy," Patristic commentators like Jerome noted it represents a unique, filial authority. Jesus does not approach God as a subject to a King, but as the Co-Equal Son to the Father.
Commentators like Maximus the Confessor argued this shows the harmony of His two natures.
1. The Human Will:
Recoils from the "cup" of death (proving He is True Man)
2. The Divine Will:
Submits perfectly to the Father (proving He is True God).
His divinity is seen in His ability to "stifle" human fear through divine resolve for the sake of the Atonement.
Many Islamic traditions suggest Jesus was NOT in agony because he was "saved" from the cross (Surah 4:157). In contrast, Mark shows the True Humanity of Jesus through His profound psychological and spiritual suffering.
