Home > Surah 22 - The Pilgrimage
1. Historical Silence:
Regional archaeology, ancient history, and the biblical record contain zero evidence that Abraham ever traveled to the Hijaz or that Mecca even existed during the patriarchal era.
2. Pagan Rebranding:
The Hajj rituals—including Tawaf (circumambulating the Kaaba) and venerating the Black Stone—were well-documented pre-Islamic polytheistic practices. The text retroactively rebrands this idolatrous heritage as "Abrahamic" to ease the Meccan transition to Islam.
3. Strategic Utility:
This projection functions as religious appropriation. It allowed the new movement to dismantle pagan theology while preserving the lucrative, established pilgrimage infrastructure of the Meccan tribes.
The Quran Verse
Surah 22:26–27:
And when We designated for Abraham the site of the House [the Kaaba]... And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]...
As seen in Surah 14, there is ZERO archaeological or scriptural evidence that Abraham EVER traveled to Mecca or instituted a pilgrimage there.
History shows the Hajj was an ancient pagan Arabian ritual involving the circumambulation of the Kaaba (which housed hundreds of idols) and the veneration of the Black Stone.
The Quran "rebrands" this pagan heritage as "Abrahamic" to make the transition to Islam easier for the Meccans. It is an act of religious appropriation rather than a recovery of lost history.
